Back yesterday from a 4 day camping weekend. Weighed in this morning at 234.6. Two pounds over from last week. I guess I think that when I go camping I can eat whatever I want and as much as I want just because there are no scales around. I will have to get busy this week and try and bring it back down. So free and easy down the road I go to lose the last bit of weight I would like to lose. That's 4 pounds I've put back on in the last two weeks. Time to make some changes in my diet again it sounds like. Not to mention I need to start walking more. I am kinda comfortable at the 240 pound mark but 220 would be more comfortable. I set my goal way beyond where I needed to at the time. I would look pretty skinny and almost unhealthy at 185 pounds. Even though that is what my BMI says I should weigh for my height. Now at 238.7 pounds. I wish I could say that it's due to the fact that muscle weighs more than fat. But I know that is not the case. It's all about accountability. Although I only log my weight progress once per week I still weigh myself everyday. I do this for my own benefit. It's kind of like one of those things that keeps me honest with myself. If I look at the scale every morning and I see plus or minus one pound or less I am usually ok with it but at the same time I know right then and there exactly what it was that I done right or wrong the previous day. Then I can make the necessary changes immediately. I am accountable to myself to make those changes today, not two or three days from now, but today. However, we go camping a lot this time of year and we don't have a scale in the camper to weigh myself on those weekend mornings when out in the woods. I know this and so I eat accordingly. I still always try to eat healthy just because that's the way I eat now. However, I have a tendency to over eat, it just all tastes so much better out in the woods over and open camp fire and after a relaxing fishing adventure or a hike in the woods looking for those pretty little tasty morels. So I eat way more than I should thinking to myself, "i'll burn it off on this next hike". But then I take a bag of trail mix in my pocket to make sure I don't get shaky and allow my blood sugar to get to low along the way and I end up munching it all along the way, knowing I have no scale to answer to in the morning. Well the problem is this, Monday morning rolls around and I wake up at home and gee, look there is my accountability tool waiting for me to hop on and weigh myself. Five pounds more than I weighed the Friday morning before and I'm pissed at myself. I know exactly what has happened and exactly what I have done. But I'm still not happy about it. So, I buckle down and get back to what I know works, eat right, only till satisfied, drink lots of water, exercise, stay positive and make myself accountable for all that I do TODAY!

Macco Out!

One More Pound

Seem to have leveled off at a pound a week the last couple weeks. Much better than gaining a pound a week. The best part is, I am happy. I am to the point I eat what I want, not what I think I should eat. I eat till I'm satisfied and don't over do it. Guess what Mom? I don't have to be a member of the clean plate club any more either. That is still probably the hardest part though. Those starving little kids in Africa still get to me. Still strength training three days a week and trying to do at least 30-40 minutes of cardio 5-6 days a week. I have been slacking on that a bit the last couple week. No great feats or revolutions to speak of for this week. Just sticking to living life on life's terms for the time being. Stuck at 238.2 pounds. However, I did discover one of the perk of losing weight and getting healthy this weekend. I went and bought me some new clothing this weekend and I didn't have to pay that extra $2.00 for the big mens clothing. Ya got to yeehaw. So now I have an extra $2.00 to spend on healthy food or the gym membership. I did accomplish a nice other little task this weekend too. I took one of my longest walks so far. Walked 5 miles in 75 minutes. A average 15 minute mile consistently for the whole 5 miles. I was very pleased about that. Anyway keeping positive, keeping on track and keepin' on.

Macco Out!

One Pound lost is One Pound lost

Yep that's all I lost this week. But it's much better than gaining a pound. I've had weeks like that before and it's ok. I just like it when the workouts seem to get easier. I lost six pounds this past week. Been so busy the last two days I haven't had time to update everyone. However, it was a pretty good week overall. We took the whole family camping last weekend and everyone had a great time. Didn't catch many trout but enough to have a feed Sunday before we left the campground. We took a hike on Saturday afternoon with the whole family. It was the highlight of my weekend. I carried my 37 pound granddaughter on my shoulders more than half of the 2 miles we hiked. About at least a 10th of a mile of that or more was up a hill at about a 15-20% incline. I didn't just walk it either, I jogged about half of it, with an extra 37 pounds. Who'd a thunk it? Three months ago I never would have dreamed anything like that would have even been possible. All is going well and I am still on track. I have kind of stopped keeping track of my calories but I still make sure I eat was is right and only until I am satisfied. No overeating, no binging, no junk food. It's all good here. So keep on keepin' on.

Macco

Down three or four pounds this week.

I guess it depends on how you look at it. I weighed in at 245 pounds this morning, which is 4 pounds down from last week. But I gained a pound last week so I am down 3 pounds from the week before. Wow, sounds too confusing even for me. Anyway, Now it's the end of the month and I've calculated my walking mileage to be 53.62 miles for the month of April. I'm ready for the warm weather so I can get outside and start walking and camping. Going to make our first campout of the year this coming weekend at Siloam Springs to do some trout fishing, it's opening weekend. I was pondering some questions in my mind this morning, Is society more accepting of overeating or smoking? I would tend to think they are more accepting of overeating. However, if I rephrase the question and ask, Is society more excepting of smoking or morbidly obese people? I'm not sure what the answer would be. Hmm...things that make you go hmmmm.....I ponder this question because I have been both, morbidly obese and a smoker. Now I am no longer a smoker and I am only obese, no longer morbidly obese. I gained one pound this week. This is the first time I have gained weight since I started this way of life back in January. Sometimes the scales is not our friend and not a true reflection of what is going on with our bodies as a whole. When we feel better, look better, and have so much more energy than ever before, things can't be wrong. I weigh myself everyday just to keep myself on track from day to day. At one point this week I weighed 246 pounds for a two pound weight loss for the week. But then I always log my weight on Tuesday mornings. Well this morning I was up. Up one pound from last Tuesday. It was a little shocking but not really all that surprising. I have been actually eating more this week than I had been. All good healthy foods of course but I don't let myself go hungry at any time. I have been fueling the fire and have been doing the same workout routine. It's time to bump up the workouts. It's all about burning more calories than you consume that way you "Burn the Fat and Feed the Muscle". As we all know muscle weighs more than fat so hopefully I really lost about two pounds of fat this week and gained 3 pounds of muscle. Hmmm....works for me anyway. So I will keep on keepin' on.

Muscle Bound and Out
Macco

This Really Is Pretty Simple Stuff

I think I'm starting to figure this stuff out. It's really pretty simple, you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, drink lots of water, eat fish and chicken, whole grains and stay away from processed foods. A little daily exercise and you got a real plan to go by. How easy can it be? Well that sounds pretty easy, but, there always is a but right? When we let our heads get involved and tell us, I wish there was an easier way or I wish I could just take a pill for a quick fix then that is our downfall. Yeah we all want to take a pill, go to sleep, and wake up the next day skinny with muscles. Gee wouldn't that be nice. But we have to remember that with no work comes no reward. Hard work, yeah that what it really takes is hard work. With that hard work comes great rewards. Not only looking good but feeling good mentally, physically, and emotionally. Why? Because we worked hard and earned it. It's not just the final end result but the whole journey that makes us the better us. Well, I only lost 2 pounds this week. But you know what? Hey, I lost 2 pounds this week! That's right, I didn't gain. I worked hard all week and I feel good about losing 2 pounds. This week has been a wonderful chapter in the journey. I am also so lucky to have the most wonderful support team in my life there ever could be. My wife to start with has always been one of the best cooks I have ever known. Guess what, she still is, she can cook some of the healthiest low calorie meals that taste out of this world. She is also so supportive in other ways always spending compliments on me and working out right along side of me. I love you honey. Then there is my mother, she makes me feel so good about this journey, always bragging about me to her friends and relatives and telling them how much weight I've lost and how good I look. Thank you mother, I love you. Even my bratty little teenage daughter who used to like to sit at the diner table and say, um this butter is soooo good, when this all first started, now puts zero calorie butter spray on her vegetables. I'm am so proud of her. Also most of the people at work have been very supportive and pretty free with the compliments. This all really is pretty simple isn't it. So, keep on keepin' on.

Not so Fat man Out!

50 pound milestone hit!!! Walking on!

Wow I hit the 50 pound milestone this week. Boy was I excited. Now the next 50 pounds is what is going to be the hard part. But I guess it will only be as hard as I choose to make it. The good part about this next 50 pounds is that a lot of it can now start taking place outside in the fresh air. The weather is finally starting to break here in the mid-west and we are looking forward to spring. Walking outside, biking outside, the start of camping and fishing season, and hiking in the woods, oh my. I have posted some pictures on my Sparkpeople page if anyone cares to view them. Before and after shots. Well this week was actually a good week. I ate right, exercised right, drank plenty of water and got plenty of sleep. Why only 2 pounds lose then? Hmmm....I don't know. But I feel ok about it. I didn't reach my walking goal I had set for last month, I only walked about 80 miles last month. But that is ok too. I have added so many other activities to my routine. I am now strength training 3-4 days a week for about an hour to an hour and a half each time, I am still walking and also biking for my cardio now so the walking alone has become a bit less important at this time. My body shape is changing too, I am losing my man boobs and my belly both. I can feel my muscles getting much stronger because I find it easier to actually run at a 6 and 7 mph pace for a minute and not be so out of breath. My workouts in the gym for my strength training are getting a little easier each time so I keep adding weight to my workout at least every week. I am going to try and add rope jumping to my routine for a little extra cardio during the day. We will see how that goes. Also only losing 2 pounds this week, I may look deeper into the calorie cycling SparkTeam and see more what that is all about. BTW, my wife was so excited that this week I was able to bend over and trim my own toe nails. So for this week Not So FatMan (but still obese by my BMI) will keep on keepin' on.

Macco

Down 44 pounds oh my

Who'd a thunk it? I never would have dreamed in my wildest dreams that it could be like this. I have lost 44 pounds as of today since January 3, 2008. I can even bend over and tie my shoes now without straining a muscle. Still walking on a daily basis and have now added stationary bike some, 100 crunches per day, and weight training on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays. My walking goals have changed a bit since I have added all the other activity. But as we become more aware of our own bodies needs we have to stay flexible and roll with the changes. It has been important to me to add the other activities and change up my routine often to keep my body guessing as to what is going on and to keep my metabolism at peak performance. I am happy, feel great, and excited about my daily workouts. It is great when we see progress, it helps to keep us motivated. However, even in times, like last week for me, when we don't lose much weight is important to look at the big picture and remember "this too shall pass". As long as we stay on track and have the support we need, weather it be here on SP or at work or at home then together we can accomplish anything. So for now the FatMan will keep on keepin' on. Till next week. Not so Fatman says see ya.

Keeping on Track

Well my weigh in this week does not reflect the way I feel and the way I am looking. that is for sure. I only lost .2 pounds this week but considering all that happened that is no surprise. I was unable to walk for three days in a row so I was doing the stationary bike. I also attended my Dad's wedding on Saturday and I had a planned food fest that day to help spike my metabolism back into high gear. But no fear I am back on schedule and plan to have a very good weigh in next week. The reason I say my weigh in does not reflect the way I look and feel is because I was looking at my self in the mirror last night and WOW, even I am seeing changes now. My man boobs and my belly are shrinking big time and my muscles in my arms are beginning to grow. I never really noticed it much before last night, but it is happening. I can also really see changes in my face and hands. Well, 36 pounds down and about 64 pounds to go. I'll keep on keepin' on.

Macco

Walking goal this month???

I am a bit concerned that I may not reach my set walking goal for this month. I have had a heel spur on the bottom of my left heel the last few days so I have been unable to walk. I have still been getting my cardio in with the stationary bike though. So it is not like I have let anything go. I have also intensified my strength training this past week. My wife and I worked out for a good solid two hours at the YMCA last night. We had a few free passes and thought we would take advantage of them. However, we only have one free pass left, so if there is anyone out there that has any free passes to the YMCA that they are not going to use I would be more than willing to come pick them up from you. My walking goal has changed a bit though. I set it at the beginning of the month to walk 120 miles this month since I done 100 miles last month. But I have since added a lot of weight training to my routine. So I am lowering my walking goal back down to 100 miles for the month. I will be more than happy with that since I am also doing about 4 hours a week of weight training now on top of the cardio. Tomorrow is my weigh in day this week and I think I have done well this week. So you will see my weight change tomorrow morning. I have also decided to go back to weighing myself everyday instead of once a week. I feel I can better monitor my progress this way. I feel it will also make me more accountable on a daily basis for all things that I do. I know that my weight will go up and down a pound or two on a daily basis but as long as it is no more than that I will feel I am doing ok. I think keeping track of everything every day make us more responsible to self. So I will keep on keepin' on and I an trying new things and adding new things to my routine every day.

Macco Out!

Fatman does 100 Miles!!!

Yes siree bob, the Fatman has walked 100.61 miles in the month of January 2008 as of last night at 6:30pm. Keep on truckin' Fatman. Gee, does that mean I don't even have to walk tonight if I don't want to? That's what it means. But I will probably still do at least an hour tonight. Despite the blister about the size of a nickel on the bottom of my right foot. Oh my, the price we must pay. But I can't wait till the weather gets nice enough to be outside and go camping now. Hiking up and down the trail will be so much easier this year. I will be carrying so much less weight with me I might have to haul a big back pack along just to feel right. Well, I'm not sure what my walking goal for February is going to be yet. I am thinking about 120 miles. With 29 days next month and 4 days off that leaves 25 days to walk. So if I walk 5 miles a day that would be 125 miles so 120 miles would leave me 5 miles to slack off with. Ok lets do it. 120 miles for February it is.

Fatman

25 Pounds in 25 days

Well, the FatMan weighed in this morning, 25 days after starting this adventure and I weighed 25 pounds lighter than when I started. Managed to get in 6.25 miles. I also had my blood pressure checked yesterday. Let me go back here a minute first. This old Fat Man does have high blood pressure. My Doctor put me on blood pressure medicine back in July 2006 after I had total knee replacement surgery on my right knee, been on it every since. Example of a few of my recorded blood pressure readings are as such: October 4, 2007 144/86, October 24, 2007 124/80, November 9, 2007 132/74, and those were after the medicine, they were pretty mild. Well I had my blood pressure taken Last wednesday and again yesterday. Last Wednesday's reading was 110/62 and yesterday's was 110/60. Eating the right foods and exercise is what it's built up to be. Take it from the old Fat Man who weighed in at 280 pounds this morning, that's 22 pounds lighter than I was just 21 days ago. Quiting Smoking December 18, 2007 has helped some too, I'm sure. Keep on Walkin'.

Fat Man

New Treadmill

Well the old Fat Man done his 90 minutes last night and walked 5 miles. Still on track to do 100 miles this month believe it or not. I'll be damned if I'm going to buy a $1500.00 treadmill and not get my $1500.00 worth of use out of it. Back down the 20 pounds again now too. 282 pounds and dropping. Started at 302 pounds on the 3rd of January 2008. As if the walking and the weight loss wasn't enough of a shocker, I also quit smoking on December 18, 2007. So it's been a month and a few days now since a cigarette. "Smoking is a Crime, Punishable by DEATH". Here is a really great web site that helped me out with that: Why Quit. Also a great web site that I have been using to track my calories and weight changes is Prevention.com, worth checking out. Well no walking yesterday, it was my day off. I take one day a week off from all exercise to give my muscles time to air out sort of speak. So tonight after work will be a 90 minute session on the treadmill. C-yall....keep on walkin'.

Fat Man

WOW Good News Finally!!!

The fat man has done it. He has gotten up off the recliner and started walking. Here is the scoop. On January 2, 2008 my wife and I went and bought a Horizone T6 treadmill from Fitness for All and a Biggest loser scale from Wal-Mart. I weighed in that day at 302 pounds. Time to get my ass in gear. Here it is 19 days later and I have changed all my eating habits and starting walking daily. I am no longer starting my morning with a dozen donuts. I am starting my day now with a healthy bowl of cereal or oatmeal. My eating habits throughout the day have changed drastically. My snacks are now fresh fruit, nuts and raisins. My lunch and diner meals are always good, Salads, fish, vegetables, turkey, chicken and so forth. I went from intaking about 5000 calories a day to intaking less then 2500 calories every day. I have walked 45 miles on the treadmill so far this month and have set a goal to walk 100 miles this month. So far I am right on track. The best news of all is that I feel good and I now weigh 283.8 pounds today. Friday I was at 282 pounds. My weight had been going down a pound or two every day until this past week. Now it has gone up a couple pounds on two different days. But that's ok, I hope it's just the fact that I am building muscle. Because I have also been going to the gym and working out with weights about every other day. So, YeeHaw, the Fat Man is back Walking.

Go Fat Man Go!!!

Still not There

Well this old Fat man is still not walking like he should. I went for a walk today and I walked .68 miles and it took me 30 minutes. Talk about a fat man. I weigh about 300 pounds now. When I was walking before I had knee surgery on my right knee I was walking a mile in about 20 minutes, Now I can't even walk 2/3 of a mile in less than 30 minutes. It's time to get my butt off the couch and start moving. I plan to work up to that 20 minute mile this month and I am setting a goal right now to walk 100 miles in the month of October. I actually started last night when my wife and I walked about 1.25 miles with the dogs.
